Butterfly Search Day

We went to this beautiful site last September land found lots of Devils-bit Scabious, the Marsh Fritillary caterpillar food plant. We did not have enough time to search the whole area for larval webs but we made a mental note to return during the butterfly's flight season. Come and help us search, there will be lots of other insects and plants to see. Beginners most welcome.

Join us and the Launceston Area Wildlife Group for a day of learning about and surveying for the Marsh Fritillary. Starting with a talk about the Marsh Fritillary, its ecology, life cycle, conservation and how to identify and survey for it. In the afternoon we will look for it. Bring a packed lunch and outdoor clothing. Further information will be provided upon booking – please contact Simon Phelps, Conservation Officer on All the Moor Butterflies to book your place.

This event is part of the Heritage Lottery Funded 'All the Moor Butterflies' project.

We will be working with our conservation partners from South West Lakes Trust searching the Crowdy Marsh area for butterflies. Crowdy lies within a SSSI on the northern tip of Bodmin Moor, just a few miles from the town of Camelford. We will be recording all the lepidoptera we see, thus providing a base line for this important area. The terrain may be a bit challenging on this one and you will need to wear wellies and bring a stick!

Cornwall Butterfly Conservation Golden Open Day celebrating Butterfly Conservation's 50th Anniversary. If you volunteer to help us fund raise at this event you will get Free Entry (including food). Lots of different jobs available such as: helping to serve the delicious food, running stalls, selling bric-a-brac or running children's activities. If you can spare some time to help with this big day we would love to hear from you.

Silver-studded Blue Butterfly Workshop

Day one – class based with focused learning on the Silver-studded Blue and also ID skills for common butterflies, then afternoon trip to Penhale sands. Day two: trip to the MOD site at Penhale. We are really grateful to our colleagues at Cornwall Wildlife Trust for helping us offer another unique learning opportunity.

Help us celebrate the beautiful moths of Cornwall with David and Sue Stone. There will be a talk, activities for all ages and fundraising, so plenty to help with!. You can volunteer for either or both days, so that you can watch the traps being set up then stay to see the first moth arrivals and/or come to see the traps being opened on Sunday morning.

This is a free workshop and booking is essential.

Please note that you must be able to commit to both workshop days.

Day one – We are going to be taking a new tactic in searching for the ever elusive Narrow-bordered Bee Hawkmoth. It was last seen on Bodmin Moor in 2008. We looked for it at its adult stage last year but had no luck. This year we are going to look for its larvae. You will get full training in the field from expert John Bebbington, the Somerset County moth recorder.

Day two – a trip to another important location on Bodmin Moor to practise our search skills.
